CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

"Joe Mancini’s coaching sessions have given me the opportunity to become a much more confident and self-aware leader over the last year. His ability to integrate real life examples and stories into leadership theory has allowed me to grow significantly as an executive. His style allows the mind to open doors and see the solutions and opportunities in every leadership situation. Joe is a master at his craft and I’m thankful he shares his gift with those seeking professional development."
Daryl Lucas, Director, Rockville Human Resources Center, US Department of Health and Human Services

"Excellent training! A thought-provoking theory of practical use! I found most useful the model itself—having a framework to store and retrieve leadership competencies. It has much depth vs. the superficial “fad” stuff you usually find. With Joe’s help, I learned how to be able to use the right leadership energy at the strategic time.”
Ed Silverman, Co-Chair of the Leadership Institute, Montgomery County Hospital

"Dr. Mancini’s Round Table Theater (RTT) is a unique methodology applicable to group diagnosis, team building and intervention. The RTT process, in a single day session, establishes a safe environment for the participants, evokes creativity, challenges existing beliefs of the participants about group processes, and enables growth opportunities supported by group peers. The RTT methodology allows group members to witness their peers through mutual experiential learning in which creativity and spontaneity are promoted. I have researched multiple approaches and methods applicable to group team building, group diagnosis and intervention. No other process can accomplish all three aspects in a single day process. With its unique format, RTT is a very potent stimulus for creating group cohesiveness."

EXECUTIVE COACHING

In his coaching with executives from profits, non-profits and government agencies, Joe is influenced by his organizational development perspective, his former counseling work, the emergence of positive psychology, and what he has learned as a Certified Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), the art of modeling human excellence.  Individuals he has coached repeatedly point out:

  • his ability to help them zero in on the patterns of negative beliefs and unquestioned assumptions that impede their forward movement;
  • his talent for knowing the right kind of questions to help them clearly articulate their challenges;
  • his ease in aiding them to see issues from different perceptual positions and then reframe the problems into a manageable structure;
  • his skill in helping them discover the core values that motivate their achievement;
  • his power to help them create well-formed, specific, achievable goals and develop the inner and outer resources and action steps to meet those goals as well as clear evidence indicating when the goals have been reached;
  • his skill in helping them forge the appropriate relationships with others to get the job done;
  • his competence in helping them mentally rehearse and solidify their learnings;
  • his facility in helping them identify and augment the strengths and resources they already have;
  • his capacity to draw on his own diverse resources to bring what is exquisitely appropriate to their dissolving obstacles and achieving success;
  • his aptitude for detecting when they need to stay in the same job or move to another to develop what they really want to do; and
  • his “kind toughness” in his interactions with them.

Coaching can be done in person in Rockville, Maryland or virtually (by phone) from any location.

Testimonials for Joe’s Executive and Professional Coaching:

The Executive Coaching that Joe Mancini provided me helped enormously to place an immediate management crisis that I confronted into perspective, but even more helpful was his knack for supporting me to examine how this crisis fit into patterns that I had repeated for decades. I am not sure that I now avoid ALL the pot holes and bone rattling bumps of leadership; nevertheless, with the help of Joe's coaching, I am presently much more aware of the patterns and more flexible in my responses.  That is quite a gift.
--Eric Goplerud
, Ph.D., Director, Ensuring Solutions to Alcohol Problems, George Washington University

Joe Mancini is an excellent coach.  With his support, I have been able to reframe issues successfully and see new ways for me to function within my system of relationships.  His insight and keen ability to orient me on my accountability has been his greatest gift to me.
--Richard Petersen, Senior Director, Mission Systems Engineering, NGMS, DMS

I found my coaching sessions with Dr. Mancini to be most helpful. For me, addressing real-life work situations is much more effective than receiving generic management training. Dr. Mancini is a master at applying theory and technique to real-life situations to arrive at effective strategies.   Through several discussions about directing projects, making assignments, setting deadlines and critiquing work, I learned useful techniques, gained confidence, and achieved better results. Most importantly, I learned that management is not an innate ability that I don’t have very much of, but rather a set of skills to be mastered. This revelation greatly improved my outlook on the supervision and management aspects of my work.

I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Dr. Joe Mancini.  Dr. Mancini captivates his audiences, exposing them to a variety of tools they can readily apply.  He has the ability to take you on a journey within yourself, guiding you to places that have either been untouched or dormant and then gently coaching you to discover your strengths and to look carefully at those things that may be impeding your success as a leader.  The good thing is that he can take you inside yourself without your even realizing that you are going there, and that is remarkable!  I should know, because, over my 35 years of leadership, management, and administration, I have been exposed to numerous techniques; but, by far, his has been the most rewarding and easy to apply.  Thank you, Dr. Mancini, for introducing me to myself and helping me to see the potential inside.
--Marlene Armstrong, Human Resource Division Director, Department of Health & Human Services.

As a Professional Writing Coach and Professional/Life Coach, Joe's ability to help me focus on what needed to be done with humor, information, suggestions and empathy allowed me to finish my dissertation in education at UCLA and then, several years later, make the important decision to leave academia in order to pursue a very different vision of my life as a full-time mother.   I most valued his ability to draw upon multiple facets and skill sets of his life (coach, consultant, academic, therapist, creative arts specialist) to coach me to see alternatives in my own.   This proved invaluable when, half-way through his sessions with me as my Professional Writing Coach while I was an assistant professor in education at St. Lawrence University, I realized that my writing block was more due to a life issue than a time management one.   Joe made the switch from Professional Writing Coach to Professional/Life Coach and helped me come to clarity on where I wanted my life to go and what truly brought me joy.  He then cheered me on as I found the courage to do it.
-- Esther Oey. Ph.D.

The Executive Coaching provided by Joe Mancini was excellent.  He has an innate ability to listen to various real life situations and provide appropriate and effective strategies to handle management crisis.  I gained a new sense of balance in approaching and resolving workplace problems.  Joe encouraged me to stretch my thinking and slow down long enough to reflect before making critical life changing decisions.  I am grateful for the opportunity to meet Joe and share the coaching experience with him.
--Linda Gray, Director, Benefits, Medical and Worklife Division, Customs & Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security

Joe Mancini is a highly skilled professional who immediately grasped the difficulties of the transition in which I found myself.   Joe was able to support me and validate my situation while providing effective, strategic advice on how to move on.
-- H.H.R., National Institutes of Health

Before beginning the Executive Coaching sessions with Joe Mancini, I admit I was a little reluctant in believing I would gain anything significant; however, that belief was quickly dispelled. After the first session, I soon realized there were benefits to be realized from the upcoming sessions, however, I just did not know what they would be.  Throughout the sessions, Joe was extremely committed in dealing with “my world” and provided realistic approaches in dealing with my situations and challenges.  I applied several of his techniques which produced the outcomes I had been striving for so long to achieve.  An outstanding service - tailored to me and my situation - that produced extraordinary, positive results!  A great opportunity that allowed me to realize my strengths, recognize my potential and build confidence in dealing with difficult situations.
--Ronald Farrell, Director, Human Capital Planning and Programs, Customs and Border Protection, Dept. of Homeland Security

My Executive Coaching sessions with Joe Mancini were a real eye opener!  He was very helpful in getting me to see how I was being perceived as a leader and showed me how I can better communicate with my employees, my clients, and my chain of command to achieve success.  Joe provided me with options and a clear path to help me reach the next level.  He educated me on establishing realistic expectations for myself and how to navigate through resistance and still achieve my goals. Definitely made me a better leader.

Testimonials About Joe’s Training Services and OD Work

Joe is a high-energy, creative facilitator with deep knowledge of what makes people tick and how to provide insight and feedback as he creates powerful learning moments.  He has read widely and studied in many disciplines and traditions and integrates all of that into his work, helping leaders and teams see their situations with fresh eyes and break through to new levels of performance.  He is wise, thoughtful and masterful in his work.
--Bob Devlin, President, Transformation Strategies, Inc.

Joe's visioning exercises were quite powerful. They helped generate some important new insights into my own as well as the organization's work path. Also, Joe's facilitation skills and calming presence provided a very safe and creative space for new ideas to emerge, new connections to be made, and team unity to build.
--S.H., Owner, Solquest

If you think you’ve heard or read all there is—or as much as you can stand—on leadership, take Joe Mancini’s course.  You’ll come away with new insights and a better understanding of how to be an even better leader!  The course helped me to evaluate my leadership from different perspectives, and I enjoyed the group interaction.  I took away a deeper understanding of my strengths, and identified weaknesses in my leadership and possible solutions (e.g., adaptive leadership: having people own their problems).
--Barbara Thompson, Executive Director, NCSHA

Joe Mancini has that rare ability to simultaneously analyze a teamwork situation and move the group to healthier and more productive interactions.  He does thorough homework to ensure the success of each program he conducts.  His work with different kinds of teams in our organization consistently yielded positive responses, and he brought real insight to the situations.
--E.H., Strategic Director of HR, Public Service Organization

The course was great! It really helped identify areas to work on and provided the tools and information to do this.  The exercises provided a lot of insight and opportunity for reflection.  The course model was great in conceptualizing leadership competencies.  Because Joe was so very caring and supportive, I felt safe to explore difficult issues.  He was absolutely enthusiastic about his work.
--Delia Olufokunbi, Ph.D., Deputy Director, ESAP at G.W.U.

After Joe created and facilitated the course, “Leadership: the Art of Influence,” when I was the Deputy Chief for Education and Training at the NIH Clinical Center, I was very pleased with the fabulous job he did.  When I left the Center, I was sad to lose his services; but several years later I found him again and recruited him to do a seminar for our Mentoring program at my new venue.  He quickly brought new life and a creative approach to the art of Problem Solving for our Mentors and Protégées.  One of the mentors attending the seminar said, “Excellent!! Loved the “psychological” elements.”  Another told me, “I loved the examples and practical exercises!”  Still another said she would be using Joe’s material right away to “enhance the Mentor/Protégée relationship.”  Very well-deserved comments on Joe’s wonderful work!
--Kim Plascjak, Leadership and Organization Development Specialist, NIH/NIAID

Joe Mancini's use of creative visualization during our strategic development retreat was invaluable. Our group's visioning and capacity to join together in productive planning was remarkable as a result. Frankly I had no idea how we were going to bridge our divergent needs and agendas. His session was extremely valuable to our group in this regard. The resulting coherence was powerful: just what we needed!
--Seth Kahan, Executive Strategy Consultant, "Accelerating Positive Change"

In what turned out to be an abbreviated amount of time, our group learned that “Tell me more” may be a simple yet powerful way to open up strained lines of communication.  Joe had just warmed us up when it was time to conclude.  We should have planned an extra morning session to continue the progress we had made in our one-day session.  Nevertheless, our group came away from the session with a better understanding of how negotiation styles need to adapt to the needs of the participants or as Joe says, “flexibility is power.”  Many of us came to grips with the fact that perception often trumps reality and that working through confrontation with colleagues helps to resolve misperceptions.
--Jay Levrio, Deputy Executive Director, American Podiatric Medical Association

ROUNDTABLE THEATRE FOR BUSINESS, An Improvisational Process for Personal, Professional and Corporate Change

Joe Mancini & Liz BerneyRoundTable Theatre for Business (RTT) was created by Joe Mancini and is facilitated with Liz Berney.  With improvisation and storytelling at its core , RTT services business processes requiring active engagement and imaginative solutions, such as:

  • team-building and development
  • visioning and re-visioning,
  • examining and changing corporate stories/culture,
  • imaginative problem-solving,
  • strategic planning,
  • conflict management,
  • product development,
  • leadership development and other executive coaching

Derived in part from the work of Augusto Boal and other improvisational and acting resources, RoundTable Theatre for Business (RTT) disengages individuals/groups from faulty assumptions, stereotypes, inadequate or out-dated mental maps, closed systems, and negative trances that inhibit business success. Participants in an RTT for Business session may try out innovative and fun behaviors, including:

  • Thinking out of-the-box (thinking the unthinkable, imagining the unimaginable) for creative purposes
  • Developing diverse ways of analyzing a dilemma
  • Responding to change more readily, openly and adaptively from an open systems perspective
  • Participating in a highly engaged manner in group visioning and decision-making
  • Embracing and managing paradox, ambiguity, disequilibrium
  • Developing team cohesion using humor and fun
  • Using play as a means of doing serious thinking and work
  • Exploring body, emotions, mind for hidden possibilities of change
  • Exploring old stories/perspectives about the company, a work process, a work relationship, etc. and dramatizing a new, more effective story
  • Allowing experimentation with risky new business roles/behaviors (sometimes with the help of “costumes” and other props) without negative judgments and real world consequences

In some sessions, after a series of warm-up exercises and improvisations of work situations which provide better access to unknown possibilities in body, mind, emotion, and spirit, a primary scenario may be staged. This process usually casts the subject (or group or sub-group) as the protagonist in a role-play of a significant problematic scene from her/his (or the group’s) business life. Each audience member in turn enters the scene to create her or his own version of the drama, thereby creating a roundtable of new ways of approaching the subject’s dilemma. Every perspective/ intervention is seen as valuable for what it does and/or does not do to re-open the individual’s (or group’s) shut-down, closed system. The ultimate goal is to widen the range of possibilities of thought, feeling and behavior available to the Seeker as he/she tries to get unstuck from the negative patterns/trances dominating the initial dilemma scene. The process also works with getting a group out of a dilemma where imagination has flagged.

Testimonials About RoundTable Theatre for Business:

As the Director of the Accelerated MBA Program at George Washington University, I am thrilled to have Drs. Joe Mancini and Liz Berney teaching and facilitating our twice-a-year orientation weekend for the students. Their job is to teach the cohort of new MBA students team dynamics and help the cohort become a cohesive group. They use Joe Mancini's Roundtable Theatre to meet both these goals. The students engage in RoundTable activities that are designed to help them get to know one another and imagine and dramatize new ways of thinking and interacting in team situations at work. They also have a great deal of fun!  Tapping their intuition and creativity, students learn how to "change frames" and problem-solve their way out of team conflicts.  Later in the program, when students find themselves stuck in some kind of team conflict, they remember and use the RoundTable Theatre techniques they learned in their opening orientation with Joe and Liz.  I heartily recommend RoundTable Theatre to any company or institution that seeks to learn methods of team-building and conflict resolution in a fun and imaginative context.
--Joyce J. Findlay, Director, Professional MBA Program, SBPM, The George  Washington University

Joe Mancini’s Roundtable Theatre is a brilliant and innovative methodology to help staff and managers become "unstuck" at work. First, we participated in a variety of engaging exercises that mirrored many of our internal challenges and dynamics. Then, through the use of scenarios, we enacted several of our key challenges. We were able to understand them more clearly and in many cases, reframe these challenges. Most important, Roundtable techniques helped us tap a myriad of possibilities for solving these challenges in unexpected ways. Roundtable Theatre is an inspiring methodology for tapping the imagination and creativity of staff and managers and helping them solve their problems through learning and playing together!
--Sharon Loker, Former Manager of Finances, Realty Management Corporation

I'm delighted to provide a testimonial for the RoundTable Theater Workshop Joe Mancini so brilliantly conducted. I was fortunate indeed to see a current work problem of mine performed by a variety of non-professional role players, and to perceive that my perceptions are susceptible of reframing.  As you know, lawyers like me pride themselves on their objectivity; your workshop showed just how subjective we can be. Thanks again for a wonderful experience!
--Richard Wiener, Attorney

Joe Mancini's Round Table Theatre is a wonderfully enlightening self- and group-awareness tool. Joe's heartfelt and engaging style made this one of the most moving group experiences I've ever participated in. I recommend Round Table Theatre to any organization seeking to build an environment of greater trust and teamwork. Thank you, Joe!
--John-Michael Dumais, Counselor, Trainer, Musician, VA.
